The Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba is unlike anything else in Spain. In the 8th century the Moors built one of the greatest mosques in the world — 856 columns, a forest of red and white arches stretching as far as the eye can see. Then, in the 13th century, the Christians reconquered the city and built a full Catholic cathedral right in the middle of it. The two are still there, intertwined, extraordinary.

Beyond the Mezquita, Córdoba rewards those who simply wander. The Jewish Quarter — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is a maze of narrow lanes, whitewashed walls and hidden flower-filled patios. The Roman Bridge crosses the Guadalquivir with views back over the old city. And the tapas are excellent.

A full day, easily filled. One of the most culturally rich cities in Andalucía.
