You leave Tarifa in the morning, cross the Strait of Gibraltar, and step off the boat into a completely different world. Same coastline visible behind you. But everything else — the sounds, the smells, the light, the pace — is unmistakably Africa.

Tangier is one of the great gateway cities. For centuries it was where Europe ended and the Arab world began — a place where traders, diplomats, artists and adventurers all passed through. That layered history is still visible everywhere: in the medina's narrow lanes, in the Kasbah overlooking the bay, in the souks overflowing with spices, ceramics and textiles.
